CHASING MAVERICKS is the inspirational true story of surfing phenom Jay Moriarity (played by newcomer Jonny Weston). When 15 year old Jay discovers that the mythic Mavericks surf break, one of the biggest waves on Earth, exists just miles from his Santa Cruz home, he enlists the help of local legend Frosty Hesson (played by Gerard Butler) to train him to survive it. As Jay and Frosty embark on their quest to do the impossible, they form a unique friendship that transforms their lives, and their quest to tame Mavericks becomes about far more than surfing. Chasing Mavericks was made with the help of some of the biggest names in the surfing world, and features some of the most mind-blowing wave footage ever captured on film.
Chasing Mavericks follows the life of Jay Moriarity as he learns the skills necessary to surf monster waves called Mavericks. After Jay's father leaves him and his mother, Jay forms a bond with a neighbor who has surfed these huge waves. Jay convinces his new mentor, Frosty, to teach him how to surf and survive these mythical swells. Along the way, both of them learn things about themselves that they never knew and work together to understand their purpose in life.
The scenery is beautiful as is the surface wave and underwater cinematography. The film has many inspirational moments and offers several worthwhile messages such as the power of dedication and commitment. We are also very pleased that the filmmakers chose to make a wholesome story that the entire family can watch together. This movie is both compelling and inspirational. We proudly award "Chasing Mavericks" our Dove "Family-Approved" Seal for all ages.
