It is a few years from now in human history. Gasoline costs $6.63 a gallon. The streets of New York city are vacant. Set in a bleak environment, this edgy film showcases Dr. Robert Neville (Will Smith), the last survivor of a deadly virus which has left only attacking mutants in its wake. Neville attempts to lead an ordinary life while searching for a cure for the mutants. He visits a video store and talks to store dummies in his loneliness as he chooses a DVD to watch. He is constantly vigilant in sending radio messages to possible other survivors “out there”. Near the end of the movie, Neville learns that there might actually be a few other survivors who have not been tainted by the deadly virus. Hope begins to wane as the year 2012 arrives.
Although the film deals with the psychological problems of being alone, and includes some revved up action sequences, it is also a violent film, with images of a deer being attacked at the throat, and the gory mutants as they continually attempt to assault Neville. The violence, along with some strong language, prevents Dove from awarding our Dove “Family-Approved” Seal to this movie as a family-friendly film.
