Racing Pepper (Manuscript)
The setting for this screenplay is Muskegon, Michigan. The Kemper family’s 8 yr. old son Jordan is the main character, along with the family dog, Pepper. Jordan is a likeable kid who gets caught stealing a Captain Adventure laser ring, while grocery shopping with his mom, Lisa. Upon discovering her son’s action, Mrs. Kemper immediately takes him directly to the store manager. Jordan is given a lecture on shoplifting, and he’s told that people can go to jail for doing this, by the manager.
Jordan and his dog Pepper have a routine of meeting at a certain place after school each day. One day, Jordan is shopping with some friends who don’t have good intentions. One of the friends places some items from the store in Jordan’s backpack, unbeknown to him. The store clerk runs after the boys, and Jordan runs home, knowing he is innocent, but scared that he will go to jail!
It is from this incident that Jordan runs away with his dog, thinking there is no other way out, even though he has very loving and supportive parents. Jordan’s and Pepper’s adventures across three state lines bring a lot of action, along with great emotional angst for his parents.
I found reading this well-written script easy to follow, and my imagination was involved from page one until the end. This story would have appeal for children and family viewing. I would hope that Feature Films for Families, or possibly even the Disney people would be interested in this real story with many good lessons for children, while at the same time enjoying a good story about a likeable boy.
