In Love and War

In August of 1942, Eric Newby and several other members of the British Special Boat Section are captured in Italy. They are released by the Italian soldiers when the Italian Armistice is signed in 1943, but a short time later they are re-captured by German soldiers, and interned in a former orphanage in a small Italian city. During his internment, Eric meets a young Italian woman and they eventually fall in love. Risking her life, she helps him escape into the mountains. Despite their fear of the Germans, a number of villagers and farmers risk everything to feed and provide shelter for him, even building a house for him in the mountains.

Dove Review

The Italian people who helped the young soldier survive were fully aware that if the Germans learned of this, they would lose their homes, families and probably their lives, but they did not hesitate to share everything they had with him. After the war ended, Eric returned to Italy and married the young woman who had done so much for him. They are still married and living in England.
