Synopsis

A wealthy shipbuilder asks Tom Ripley (Matt Damon) to bring his errant playboy son back home to America. Given a thousand dollars and the chance for an adventure in Italy, Tom quickly agrees. But once there, he realizes that the idyllic lifestyle Dickie Greenleaf (Jude Law) and his expatriate girlfriend, Marge Sherwood (Gwyneth Paltrow), have become used to is one he wants to make his own.

The unbalanced Ripley kills his hedonistic acquaintance and attempts to take his place. Alas, the seeds of evil he sows soon become a garden of frustration as he darts across the country trying to stay one step ahead of the police – and anyone else who might expose him.
