Dove Review

This film follows the experiences of a young girl named Clara at Christmastime. She is hopeful and joyful about the things she is passionate about: video blogging, her family, her dog Jake, and Christmas. However, she faces challenges in all these departments when she strives for the best vlog; when her family is separated for the holidays; when her dog runs away; and when she finally loses hope in Christmas.

Clara has so much fun making positive vlogs about her daily activities, but she has a simple camera that is not best suited for what she wants to do. Her family is struggling financially; as a result, her father has to be more committed to his job than he is to spending time with his family. Her mother, Elsa, reveals that they almost divorced due to the disconnectedness they experience, and we see several scenes that exhibit a deep sadness bordering on despair, especially from Elsa.

When Clara’s dog runs away, she, too, begins to feel despondent. They search everywhere, and the neighbor who is also struggling in his own way, helps to save the day. Likewise, Elsa’s sister visits often with her husband and daughter, and the two families are contrasted in terms of togetherness with the latter being close and interactive. The closeness of the two families helps Clara manage the loss of her father’s presence at Christmas, and keep alive the hope that is waning in her. The pleasant surprise of his timely return showcases the power of commitment and renewal. Clara’s Christmas gift is a symbol of this, as it enables her to capture the goodness that results from being united in love.
