Synopsis

It is the year AD 203 in Carthage, North Africa. Perpetua, an affluent young mother, is charged with converting to Christianity and is sent to prison. But her freedom can be secured easily. All she has to do is offer one pinch of incense to honor the Roman gods. With this simple act of devotion and loyalty to the Roman Empire, she can regain her freedom and return to her infant son and a life of comfort. As her father pleads for Perpetua to consider the welfare of her child and the reputation of their family, she slowly makes her way to face the Roman proconsul and declare her final decision. What will it be? This episode of Torchlighters: Heroes of the Faith presents one of the most influential, true stories of the early Church.

Dove Review

“The Perpetua Story” is an amazing narrative about strength in the face of adversity. The story takes place in Carthage, North Africa, in AD 203. Perpetua has a child and her father, Lucius Vibia, persists in trying to get her to recant her Christian faith so she is not harmed, perhaps even killed, by the Roman government. He even attempts to use the safety of her child against her. But Perpetua stands strong with her friends. When she dreams that she and her friends are martyred and go to be with the Lord, it is obvious her time is short.

This extraordinary story, based on historical facts, is well done and demonstrates what the power of faith can do. The animated feature shows Perpetua with a radiant and serene look on her face just as she is about to meet the sword, after having survived the attack of wild animals! We are pleased to award “The Story of Perpetua” our “Faith-Friendly” Seal for ages twelve and above. This is a good educational tool and will inspire viewers everywhere.
