Dove Review

“Foundations of Freedom” is an amazing and informative six-disc set! It focuses on America’s heritage and how our forefathers envisioned our great country when the signing of the Declaration of Independence took place. It also looks at our country’s early years following its birth and how education and our view of Christianity compares from then to now. Make no mistake about it: this is a relevant series!

The panel features experts in their fields including historian David Barton, media personality Glenn Beck, former legislator and radio host Rick Green, professor and author Dr. Carol M. Swain, and Congresswoman and mom Michelle Bachman.

The three main topics on the first disc: 1. The Bible, with Rick Green; 2. Foundations of Law, with Michelle Bachman; 3. Foundations of Law, part two.

The subjects touched on are too numerous to mention, but amazing facts come to light, including the revelation that 34% of direct quotes used in the early era of our nation came from the Bible. Interestingly, quotes that people use every day come from the Bible, which will come as a surprise to many: by “the skin of my teeth” (Job); “two cents worth” (Mark); and “wit’s end” (Psalms) all are from the Bible. It may also surprise many to learn that Thomas Jefferson, who came up with a plan of education and founded the public school system, included the New and Old Testament in his curriculum.

Benjamin Rush, considered the father of public schools, listed a dozen reasons why the Bible would not be taken out of the school system. Fisher Ames, a framer of the Bill of Rights, was concerned that the Bible never be overlooked in the classroom. Ben Franklin spoke of a “superintending providence” answering their prayers. He asked, “Have we now forgotten that powerful friend?”

This wonderful DVD set features fantastic artistic renderings of various Founding Fathers and historically significant people who helped form our country based on Christian principles. Suggested actions are featured too, such as memorizing Scripture and being bold. It sounds prophetic when reading the words of Thomas Jefferson on screen as he said that laws could be as wax in the hands of lawmakers, to shape as they will if there are not clear standards. One of the things Jefferson wanted on his tombstone was that he was an advocate for religious freedom.

Jurisdiction is also a hot topic in the series, and the fact that civil government has at times overstepped its jurisdiction. In disc two, the topics are: 1. What makes America different?; 2. The Bible and Civil Justice; 3. The Bible and Economics. Disc three: 1. The Bible and Science; 2. The Bible, Competition and Choice; 3. The Bible and the Judiciary. Disc four: 1. God and Government; 2. A Courageous Church; 3. Real Religion. Disc five: 1. Manners and Civility; 2. Political Integrity; 3. Raising Expectations. Finally, in disc six, the topics are: 1. One Nation Under God; 2. Great American Myths; 3. A Republic that Stands.

It is impossible to watch this series and NOT learn something. David Barton constantly uses historical comments from the likes of Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, Rush, John Adams, John Quincy Adams, John Locke, and on and on. The panelists are top notch; they are people with credentials and intelligence who know what they are talking about when it comes to today’s political hot potatoes.

Everything from taxes to manners, marriage to science and the Bible, and a host of other important topics are covered in this exhaustive yet informative and interesting DVD set. We cannot recommend this series enough. Even various forms of governments and how they are addressed in Scripture is examined. This series is suitable for all ages, but the subject matter is not intended for the very young. This documentary series has earned five Doves from us, our best rating. It is an illuminating series that merges the old with the new and brings history to life!
