Limited Theatrical Release – From the Rough, starring Academy Award nominees Taraji P. Henson and Michael Clarke Duncan and Tom Felton, is the inspirational true story of Catana Starks from historically black university Tennessee State, who became the first African-American woman ever to coach an all-men’s team at the collegiate level. Through grit and determination, she overcame incredible odds and deep-seated prejudice from all corners to guide a rag-tag group of golfers to an all-time record championship season.
“From the Rough” is an inspiring and dramatic movie! The film is based on a true story. Taraji P. Henson plays Golfing Coach Catana Starks, and she spearheads the new men’s golf team for minority collegiate tournaments at Tennessee State University. She has to deal with the hard-nosed Athletic Director who is not supportive and expects her to fail. She winds up recruiting talent from Australia and England as well as a French golfer. This rag-tag team doesn’t look like much in the beginning, especially when they are supplied with old equipment.
But Starks has a reputation of bringing out the best in people, even coaching a winning swim team when she wasn’t a very good swimmer herself. She will need all the people skills she can muster when she deals with a team which includes an angry young man, a man who has terrific talent but doesn’t believe in himself, and a man who falls for one of the coach’s former female swimmers.
“From the Rough” should not be missed! You will enjoy this gritty and powerful movie. This film is awarded our Dove “Family-Approved” Seal for ages twelve plus. It’s a must see.
