From the Rough

Limited Theatrical Release - The remarkable true story of how one woman changed the world of sports forever. When Catana Starks (Academy-Award Nominee Taraji P. Henson) became the first African-American woman to coach an all-men’s team at the collegiate level she expected it to be tough but she had no idea just how challenging it would be. With no scholarships to offer and only one US student willing to join the team, she reached out across the globe to assemble a ragtag group of golfers including a clean cut kid from Australia, a wanna-be rapper from Korea and a street kid from London (Tom Felton). With sheer grit, determination and some unusual training tactics she guided this culture club of misfits to an all-time record championship season. Along the way she taught them no matter how rough the start, with the right aim and drive, anyone can triumph against overwhelming odds.

Dove Review

“From the Rough” is an inspiring and dramatic movie! The film is based on a true story. Taraji P. Henson plays Golfing Coach Catana Starks, and she spearheads the new men’s golf team for minority collegiate tournaments at Tennessee State University. She has to deal with the hard-nosed Athletic Director who is not supportive and expects her to fail. She winds up recruiting talent from Australia and England as well as a French golfer. This rag-tag team doesn’t look like much in the beginning, especially when they are supplied with old equipment.

But Starks has a reputation of bringing out the best in people, even coaching a winning swim team when she wasn’t a very good swimmer herself. She will need all the people skills she can muster when she deals with a team which includes an angry young man, a man who has terrific talent but doesn’t believe in himself, and a man who falls for one of the coach’s former female swimmers.

“From the Rough” should not be missed! You will enjoy this gritty and powerful movie. This film is awarded our Dove “Family-Approved” Seal for ages twelve plus. It’s a must see.
