“Ragamuffin” is the true story of Rich Mullins, a prodigy musician who rose to Christian music fame and fortune only to walk away and live on a Navajo reservation. An artistic genius, raised on a tree farm in Indiana by a weathered, callous father, Rich wrestled all of his life with the brokenness and crippling insecurity born of his childhood. A lover of Jesus and a rebel in the church, Rich refused to let his struggles with alcoholism, addiction, and women tear him away from a God he was determined to love. As he wrestled with success in Nashville, depression in Wichita, and oblivion in the Four Corners, Rich became one of the first of his time to live honestly amidst a culture of religion and conformity
brother Rich’s brokenness and struggles
This is quite a movie based on quite a story. It is the story of Rich Mullins, a prominent Christian musician and singer who became well known for his song “Our God is an Awesome God” as well as many other Christian songs. Rich certainly was not conventional and was transparent before people. He knew no one was perfect and that everyone needed the grace of God. He wrestled and struggled with weaknesses including drinking. He also accepted a salary based on what the average American made despite earning a very good income from his music. He gave a lot of it to charities and churches. Rich grew up with a stern farmer for a father but found love in his relationship with God and with his Christian friends. He loved to make music that was real and from his heart and rebelled against making music just for the sake of it being popular.
Michael Koch is remarkable as Rich Mullins and does his own singing in the film. This DVD has a very clear faith message but does contain some strong content including drinking in many scenes, smoking, and several utterances of language. We are awarding it our Faith Based Seal due to its strong redemptive message. “Ragamuffin” will inspire everyone who has struggled with life’s problems and addictions.
