Hollywood And The Family

A COLUMN BY Dick Rolfe Chairman, THE DOVE FOUNDATION

October 1997

Dove Joins National Boycott

In my August column, I urged people not to "commit spiritual capital punishment" by boycotting the entire Walt Disney Company and all of its holdings. It appears to me fundamentally wrong to try and "teach Disney lesson" by financially wrestling them to the ground and forcing them to comply with our demands. Such a hostile approach also seems counterproductive, especially for those who are attempting to build bridges and share the love of Christ with a Disney employee or executive.

As fellow columnist, Bob Briner said in a article entitled, "Boycotts and the Gospel," The Christian's mandate is to "fish in the pond, not to clean up the pond." Briner goes on to say that we should look on Disney, (and other political and popular culture arenas) not as enemy territories, but as mission fields.

My recommendation has always been that each person should refuse any product or activity that does not meet his or her own standards. That's called selectivity, not censorship. Recently, Disney-owned ABC has provided the perfect scenario to help make my point. The alphabet network made the conscious decision to produce a weekly television series called, rightly enough, "Nothing Sacred." According to an action alert published by the American Family Association, "'Nothing Sacred' is about a profane priest named Father Ray, who admits to hating God, and who opposes everything biblical Christianity teaches on subjects like abortion, promiscuity and homosexuality."

Father Robert Sirico, head of the Acton Institute, observed a more cunning subtext to the story line which "seeks to undercut the basic precepts of Catholicism and Christianity by attempting to collapse the transcendency of God."

The show's own promotional hype describes Father Ray as a man who "just cursed out an obnoxious guy on the street, came pretty close to accepting a bribe and almost got fired." David Manson, the show's Executive Producer was quoted in USA Today as saying, "we're unrepentant about the choices we've made for the show."

Twenty-seven religious and pro-family organizations have joined together in a specific action to boycott "Nothing Sacred" and to notify ABC and the show's sponsors of their grievance.

In a decision consistent with its earlier position on product or activity-specific boycotts, The Dove Foundation concludes that a boycott of the television series, "Nothing Sacred" is the appropriate response to an insensitive programming decision by ABC Entertainment, a division of the Walt Disney Company.  The Dove Foundation encourages its supporters and friends to "vote with their remotes" by refusing to watch the ABC television series, "Nothing Sacred." Furthermore, The Foundation asks people to contact the Walt Disney Company, ABC and its local affiliates and the show's advertisers. We urge them to share their feelings about television entertainment which intentionally undermines the integrity of people of faith, especially the clergy. This is not a company-wide boycott, but a measured response to an intentional act.

It's my guess that no Disney division would ever consider launching spurious attacks on the character of other target groups such as minorities, women or homosexuals. It is not unreasonable for Christians and Jews to expect the same consideration.
